Directly descended from the DB28, the winner of the 2011 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève “Aiguille d’Or” (the highest award of the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix), the DB28T – the T is for Tourbillon/Titanium – stands as a contemporary masterpiece, blending ancestral horological knowledge with technical and scientific advances that still set benchmarks. Faithful to the De Bethune spirit, the DB28T ably perpetuates the company's heritage: daring aesthetics and exceptional mechanics, with distinctive cues that denote its origins in the iconic DB28.

Perpetual prowess

The DB28T, powered by the mechanical hand-wound DB Calibre 2019, represents a complete rethink of the tourbillon in terms of its application in wristwatches. The laws of physics are implacable: to compensate for the random “abruptness” of wrist movements, the tourbillon carriage must be as lightweight as possible and present a high frequency and maximum rotation speed, along with minimum inertia. Utilising new technologies, De Bethune developed a staggeringly lightweight 0.18-gram silicon-titanium tourbillon. It is fitted inside a carriage that rotates on itself every thirty seconds – instead of the conventional 60 – and equipped with a balance-wheel oscillating at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour. This tourbillon is the lightest on the market (classic tourbillons are four times heavier) and comprises 63 parts, of which the lightest weighs less than 0.0001 grams and the heaviest 0.0276 grams. On the dial side, the self-regulating twin barrels ensure a 5-day power reserve, which can be monitored with the indicator in rose gold visible through the sapphire case back.

Polished presence

With titanium as the key element in the composition of the case and floating lugs of the DB28, mirror-polished and satin-brushed finishes complement each other. The many ways in which light plays across the shapes and angles reveal unimagined hues. Decorated by hand, the parts present various types of high watchmaking finishes, with rose-work grinding on the barrel ratchets and on the back, a plate with “De Bethune” concentric graining.

With the iconic crown at 12 o’clock, the DB28 is already known and appreciated for the ‘organic’ wearability and comfort that comes with its floating lugs – a patented system that espouses the wrist throughout its full range of motion. With the DB28T, that sensation is only heightened by the uncanny lightness of titanium.
